Communications and Membership Coordinator
Location: Franklin Lakes, NJ 07417
Reports to: Office Manager
Congregation B’nai Jeshrun – Barnert Temple – is an innovative Reform Jewish Temple located in Franklin Lakes, NJ with 400+ member families. We seek a creative, savvy, and self-motivated individual who has outstanding writing, editing, and organizational skills. This person will have broad responsibility to help guide the Temple’s communication and social media portfolio, interacting and coordinating with the Rabbi, Office Manager, Director of Life Long Learning and temple lay leaders. Our team members each wear multiple hats in our very busy office; the responsibilities are diverse and include some administrative work.
Communications:
• Create a broad communication strategy, work with Rabbi, office manager and leadership to establish innovative approaches to communication
• Oversee internal and external communications and develop new ways to share Barnert Temple’s vision and mission
• Create lively content for emails, eblasts, website, bulletins, social media to promote educational, social, and religious events
• Write and edit content of marketing pieces, invitations, announcements, forms for print and electronic media.
• Oversee creation and content of quarterly magazine
Membership engagement
• Create a communications strategy for outreach to potential new members in partnership with our lay membership committee
• Prepare and send correspondence to new and resigning members
• Develop engagement methods for welcoming new members
• Create and administer member and non-member surveys, via Survey Monkey or other tools
• Coordinate with Cemetery committee; assist members and other with purchase of plots; prepare deeds; maintain database
• Prepare correspondence such as thank you notes for donations and yahrzeit letter reminders
• Coordinate with Ritual Committee chair on High Holidays, including ticket distribution, special seating accommodations, mailings and other tasks as needed
• Coordinate, edit and maintain annual Book of Remembrance
Technology
• Proactively maintain, update and create website content
• Update database(s) via ShulCloud, for membership changes, event forms and other functions
• Oversee Live Streaming contract and schedule
• Supervise afternoon camera set-up when Friday services are outdoors or location other than Sanctuary (lay leaders will manage operation of cameras during worship services; Coordinator not required to be present on Shabbat)
• Manage and coordinate temple calendars
• Liaison with IT and Ritual Tech Task Force committees
• Implement the use of texting with Shulcloud and/or One Call Now for certain types of communication (i.e. weather cancellations or other short, time sensitive communication.)
General Administration
About 20% of time will include assisting in general office duties including but not limited to answering phones, opening mail, coordinating room assignments; preparing and sending important time-sensitive temple-wide announcements via One Call Now, email or text messages.
Schedule and Workplace
The position is full-time, a Monday-Friday work schedule, with the possibility of optional attendance at an occasional evening or weekend job responsibility. Currently, with COVID social distancing, the office team is working onsite on a rotating basis. Post COVID, the Coordinator may continue to work remotely several days a week upon supervisor approval. An occasional last-minute evening or weekend communication may need to be prepared and sent such as weather emergencies/cancellations or funeral information. The temple building is 100% ADA accessible. The Temple is located in a suburban setting off a major highway; there is no public transportation, but parking is located at the temple. After a brief probationary period, the incumbent will be eligible for vacation, health insurance and 403(b). The office is closed on major Jewish holidays in addition to federal holidays.
Qualifications:
• Excellent interpersonal skills, clear writing and critical thinking skills
• Skilled at Microsoft Office suite/Office 365, Excel, Google Drive/Docs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, WordPress, Powerpoint, Canva (or other design tools); Survey Monkey; Shulcloud experience a plus
• Ability to learn and adapt to new and changing software
• Proven ability to work independently and handle multiple tasks with extreme attention to detail
• Comfortable collaborating with many different committees and lay leaders
• Compassion, confidence and poise when speaking with members.
• Ability to work well in a team setting, showing respect for all
• Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
• High level of personal and professional integrity
• At least two years’ relevant experience in the communications field
• Knowledge of Jewish rituals and culture a plus; experience in a synagogue or other Jewish organization a plus but not required
